The rate of youth type 2 diabetes in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders is 20 times higher than in non-indigenous Australians. Many of these youths live in poverty with educational disadvantage, intergenerational trauma and a lack of food security. To combat this issue, Menzies established the Youth 2 Type Diabetes project providing resources in a culturally safe way. This project utilised community-led intervention where participants share their perspective and how they would best resonate. First we create a brand in collaboration with local indigenous artist Norma Benger. Followed by a series of videos featuring young people living with type 2, Aboriginal Health Practitioners, and Menzies staff. These resources exist to educate, engage, and empathise with young people to promote the opportunity of a long and healthy life. The videos are shared with young people at health centres, schools, and other community groups. Sharing brave stories like this can change how young mob feel about diabetes.
